Immersion Weeks for Older Children

Explore, Connect, and Contribute

From the next school year (starting September 2026), our community will open space for older children. We invite families to join us for Immersion Weeks during the holidays (Easter and Summer). These weeks are designed so children can connect with peers, meet the team, discover the space, and get a real sense of life in the project. This is not a holiday camp—it is a gentle introduction for families considering joining us full time from September. Spaces are limited so that connections stay meaningful and the environment supportive.

Age groups

We will open two mixed-age groups:

  • Explorers (7–10 years) — Focused on curiosity, discovery, and developing confidence in nature and creative projects.
  • Pathfinders (11–14 years) — For older children ready to explore autonomy, take on responsibilities, and engage in meaningful projects alongside peers.

Children spend most of the week together as a community; some activities and projects may happen within each age group.

What the week will look like

The immersion week reflects daily life in our project: a balance of free exploration, creative play, collaborative projects, and connection with the land and community.

Children will have access to: Arts and crafts, woodwork and building, nature exploration, cooking workshops, open creative play, gardening, physical exercise.

In addition we include: Cooperative games to help children connect; parallel projects where children can choose what interests them most; physical and movement workshops (e.g. capoeira, martial arts, yoga) with visiting facilitators; an introduction to the democratic side of the project, including daily meetings to propose and decide on projects, plan activities, and resolve conflicts together.

Parallel project examples

Explorers (7–10 years)

  • Creative construction projects — small structures, playful installations, woodwork
  • Gardening and permaculture tasks — preparing beds, planting, mulching
  • Art and crafts for the community

Pathfinders (11–14 years)

  • Larger building projects — outdoor furniture, shelters, tool storage
  • Designing and preparing the permaculture garden
  • Collaborative creative or land-based installations
  • Leading workshops or mentoring younger children

Children can choose which project to join, rotate between them, and spend the week contributing to something meaningful for the space and community.

Example day

Morning

  • Arrival and circle — check-in, propose ideas, plan the day
  • Shared snack
  • Project block 1 — children choose among 2–3 parallel projects

Midday

  • Cooking and shared lunch
  • Free play, rest, or short nature exploration

Afternoon

  • Project block 2 — continue or try a new project
  • Optional movement workshop — capoeira, martial arts, or yoga
  • Closing circle

This rhythm gives children space to invent, explore, and connect while providing gentle structure and moments to reflect on the day.

Focus on connection, not academics

During the immersion weeks we do not focus on academics. The aim is for children to feel emotionally safe, connect with peers, the team, and the space, and explore the rhythm of our community before the school year begins. In our regular school life, academics are part of the day. Even during the immersion week, children learn through project-based workshops—planning, calculating, drafting, tool use, teamwork, and problem-solving in a hands-on way.
