We are Barefoot Hearts — a living, free, and democratic educational project nestled in the magical forest of Turís, Valencia. Here, childhood sets the pace; children learn through play, nature, and community. Our site is a patchwork of buildings, gardens, and wild corners that need care, improvement, and the occasional new build so that the project runs safely and smoothly for everyone.
We are searching for a Facilities & Site Maintenance person to join our small team. You will be the hands and eyes on the ground: maintaining buildings and fittings, improving storage and security, shaping spaces for children and staff, and helping with a mix of carpentry, installations, and land care. You will work in close coordination with the team, and some tasks will involve working alongside the children (for example, a cabin-building workshop).
What we offer
- This is a full-time position, Monday–Friday, 9:00–17:00.
- A role in a heart-centered community that prioritises joy, freedom, responsibility, and connection — where your work directly supports children, families, and the daily life of the project.
- Variety: from carpentry and shelving to cameras and walkie-talkies, from paths and fencing to flooring and small construction — no two weeks need look the same.
- The chance to shape the physical space of Barefoot Hearts: safer, more organised, and better suited to democratic education and free play.
- A beautiful, nature-immersed setting in the forest of Turís, with a supportive team and a clear sense of purpose.
Main responsibilities
You will take the lead on a set of site and facilities tasks, including:
-
Buildings and fittings: Installing the external bathroom tap (materials already purchased), adding exterior wood cladding to the chalets and bathroom, and redoing the carpentry space with a secure lockable door. You will also build a lockable annex to the carpentry for secure storage of children's bikes, tractors, and similar equipment.
-
Roofing and site appearance: Removing the blue plastic sheeting from ceilings, from the sides of the cantina, and from the new second-shop building. Improving visual screening from the fence at key points on the land, and installing a small protective fence around the solar panels.
-
Shelving and storage: Reinforcing existing shelving in the coworking and school buildings, and adding shelving in the cantina.
-
Kitchen and cantina: Creating a kitchen workshop space in the cantina, adding the kitchen bar, and building a small annex next to the kitchen building.
-
Workshops with children: Designing and running a cabin-building workshop with the children, in line with the project's ethos.
-
Paths and access: Making the path from the parking area to the school so that access is safe and clear.
-
Flooring: Laying linoleum flooring in the chalets, cantina, and school shop.
-
Site maintenance: General land clearing and tidying in coordination with the team.
-
Tech and safety: Installing four additional cameras on the site and giving the team access for monitoring children who wander and for general security; installing a walkie-talkie system for the team and children.
-
School spaces: Redoing the school circles during the summer so they are ready for the new academic year.
We are looking for someone who
- Has practical experience in carpentry, general maintenance, or construction — and is comfortable with a varied list of hands-on tasks.
- Can work independently and in coordination with the team, with clear communication and reliability.
- Is willing to work alongside children when the role requires it (e.g. the cabin-building workshop), in a respectful and supportive way.
- Is comfortable with basic tech installations (e.g. cameras, walkie-talkies) or willing to learn.
- Has their own vehicle (essential for reaching our forest location in Turís).
- Is available for the agreed schedule and committed to making the site safer and more functional for everyone.
If you like the idea of maintaining and improving a place where children run barefoot, build cabins, and grow in freedom — we would love to hear from you.
